Posted (03/08/2005) - Massillon, Ohio - Team Sahlen's Grand-Am Cup effort is heading south to the beautiful Dominican Republic for a race at the Autodromo las Americas track. This is the team's first race outside of the US or Canada and their line-up of drivers is stirring up excitement. Driver Victor Gonzalez, Jr. already has a documented history with the las Americas track. As a native of Puerto Rico, Gonzalez posted his first victory at the las Americas track during 2000. Gonzalez hopes to earn another victory for the Grand-Am Cup Miller 200 this coming weekend. "I am super excited about the opportunity to be driving with Team Sahlen again. They are a very professional team, as evidenced by their Grand-Am Cup championships in 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2004. To be invited by them to come in and race with them is a real honor. I feel like Santo Domingo is my second home and to be able to come in here race is just awesome. It would be a great weekend to come in here and get a podium. To win the race would be a dream." States Victor Gonzalez Jr. Santo Domingo marks Gonzalez's third race with Team Sahlen. Last year Victor drove with the team at the Homestead Grand-Am Cup race and finished in 10th place. At this year's Rolex 24, Victor heavily contributed to the team's top ten finish at the 2005 ROLEX 24 at Daytona. Gonzalez will be co-driving with Will Nonnamaker in Team Sahlen's No. 43 car. Will Nonnamaker will be doing double duty during the Santo Domingo weekend. Nonnamaker will start the race with Gonzalez in the Team Sahlen No. 43 car but will be finishing the race for long-time race enthusiast Joe Sahlen in No. 42. Sahlen joined the 2004 Grand-Am Cup Grand Sport champions this season and will be entering his second race with the team. Sahlen and Nonnamaker also paired up during the Daytona 250 this past February. Joining forces in the No. 40 car will be the father-son combination of Joe and Wayne Nonnamaker. The duo scored several podium finishes in 2004 and are hoping for a big race at the las Americas race. "This is a race we are very excited for, a chance to race in front of a whole new audience and to have driver that is accomplished at this track is even better. We are really looking forward to the race," stated Wayne Nonnamaker. Team Sahlen competes in this year's Miller Grand-Am Cup 200 with participation from Speed Group International, HRPWorld.com, TheRaceSite.com, Hawk Performance, TheRaceMarket.com, Kempthorn Auto Mall, UNICHIP, Lamin-X, RaceTech, and Grassroots Motorsports. |
